The Seven Co-operative Principles

At Alwoodley Community Energy, our principles guide everything we do. As a Community Benefit Society, we’re built on values that prioritise the well-being of our members, our community, and the environment.

Here’s what drives us:

1. Voluntary and Open Membership

This type of co-op is owned and run by its members and exists to serve the wider community, including customers, workers, suppliers, and local residents.

2. Democratic Member Control

Every member has an equal voice in decisions about how it’s run and how profits are used.

3. Members’ Economic Participation

Members contribute financially in various ways, whether by buying products, working within the co-op, investing in it, or helping decide how to use its profits.

4. Autonomy and Independence

As an independent, member-owned organisation, we are driven by community priorities, not outside interests.

5. Education, Training and Information

We provide training and learning opportunities for all members, empowering our community to grow and promote the benefits of cooperation.

6. Cooperation Among Cooperatives

We support and work with other co-ops, sharing resources and ideas to build a network of strong, community-centered initiatives.

7. Concern for Community

Above all, we’re committed to giving back. Our projects and profits go directly into supporting the communities we serve, strengthening local resilience and sustainability.
